The hamlet of Le Hourdel

Explore this little fishing village in the Somme Bay, as beautiful as a picture.

Entry point for visits from colonies of brown seals and harbour seals, the hamlet of Le Hourdel in Cayeux-sur-Mer, offers a typical landscape of the Somme Bay and the possibility to observe the seals in their natural environment.

The Pointe du Hourdel welcomes you with its few restaurants, beach huts and small shops, its small port and its lighthouse, a vast landscape of asters and salt meadows and, at the point, a long pebble beach.

The small fishing port of the Hourdel still supplies visitors and locals with returning to shore in gray shrimps, mackerels, carrrelets, mules, mullets, soles ... Part of the production is exported to Dieppe, Rouen, Nantes and Rungis.

A privileged site for the observation of seals

Two seal species can be observed : mainly marine calves, but grey seals can also be seen. To observe the seals without disturbing them, the ideal would be to stay at a minimum of 700 ft distance.

Seals sleep in the water at high tide, flowing vertically, and make the bottle. They remain immersed for long minutes and then ascend to breathe. At low tide, they allow themselves to be drawn into the channels, fish and take advantage of the first sandbanks discovered to rest.

Located 24 km from the Hotel Le Cise, you may walk on the beautiful white road from Cayeux sur mer to the Hourdel (for pedestrians only between the dunes).
